How do I know which level to attend?
If you are an absolute beginner, we suggest you begin with our Flow Foundations classes or Private Instruction. All Levels is also a good place to start for healthy beginners. All Levels classes are appropriate for those who have some familiarity with yoga, as there will be a range of experience levels in any given class.
Do I need to be flexible?
Believe it or not, most regular practitioners rarely talk about flexibility in their practice. The most common poses are accessible to almost everyone. Of course, the key is to modify as you need and remember that everyone in the room experiences, more or less, the same sensations regardless of how they look in a pose. The key to practicing yoga is breath control (Ujayi Breath), focused attention (Dristi), and core strength (Bandas). These elements are accessible to even the most inflexible person.
Is yoga a workout? Will I lose weight?
The answer depends on the style of yoga you select, as well as the frequency and intensity with which you practice. Although the focus in yoga is letting go of distraction and synchronizing breath with movement, a regular yoga practice will not only relax your mind and offer heightened clarity of thought, but will also change your body. You will burn calories as you create long, lean muscles and cultivate a greater range of motion. Furthermore, as our minds calm and we become more aware of what is happening in the present moment (rather than our normal state of dwelling on the past or future), we tend to make better choices, which ultimately improve our health and well-being.
Is yoga a religion?
Yoga has a philosophical component which distinguishes it from exercise, but it is not a religion. Shri believes in letting people connect to the practice in whatever way feels comfortable. You don't have to hold any particular viewpoint to experience the benefits of the practice. Like anything in life, the more present and engaged you are, the more likely you are get something out of it.
What should I wear?
We keep the warm studio between 78 – 82 degrees year-round and the hot studio above 90 degrees. We suggest comfortable, stretchy clothing that is not too loose since it will get in your way and make it difficult for the instructor to check your alignment. Most women wear a tank or tee with leggings, and men usually wear a tee with shorts. Do plan to practice in bare feet andremove jewelry. We strongly encourage that you do not wear watches or bring cell phones into the studio. We also ask you refrain from wearing scented lotions and perfumes in respect for those who have sensitivities to fragrances.
Can I leave during class?
This is an issue we address on a fairly regular basis. In order to keep disruptions to a minimum, please plan to arrive on time and stay for the entire class. If, for some reason, you need to leave early, it's a good idea to let the instructor know in advance. You are, of course, always welcome to enter and exit the studio (quietly, please) during class to use the restroom. We understand that people have schedules outside of the studio and we want each person to feel at ease when they are at Shri. Whether your are the one staying or the one going, consider the yoga teaching of Ahimsa, which is the first step on yoga's eight-limbed path. It involves doing no harm (so minimize actions that will disrupt your neighbor) and cultivating compassion (the only thing we control is our reactions to what happens around us, so endeavor to react with acceptance and a loving heart - you'll live longer).
