Shri utilizes a sophisticated system of multiple heat sources, including far infrared heating panels combined with steam purified humidity to create the healthiest heat for your yoga practice.

The Benefits of Far Infrared Heat

The ideal conditions for practicing hot yoga are a temperature above 90°F with 50% humidity. Shri Yoga is the first yoga studio in the Chicagoland area to offer far infrared heat. We chose infrared heat because of its numerous therapeutic benefits. Far infrared heat doesn’t heat the air; it heats your body. This critical difference means that the infrared heat creates a thermal effect in the deep layers of your tissues, which has been proven to be very beneficial. It is also perfectly safe; in fact, it is the same heat source used in incubators to keep newborn babies warm. Other benefits to enjoy:

  • Enhances metabolism and burns fat
  • Decreases stiffness and increases flexibility
  • Increases blood flow, thereby delivering fresh oxygenated blood at a better rate to all systems of the body
  • Assists in removal of inflammatory free-radicals from the body
  • Shown to be the only effective method of removing heavy metals including mercury from the body.
  • Infrared heat has been introduced into some cancer therapies and has been may aid in treating a number of ailments: autoimmune diseases, acne, psoriasis, eczema, and insomnia.

Other unique and positive differences to enjoy about our studio are the airflow, the amount of fresh air, and the purity of our steam humidification. These three combine together to create a high comfort index, which is different than a heat index. If you’re standing in a hot, humid room that has good air circulation, constant fresh air, and clean humidity, your body cools itself naturally through sweating and evaporation, and it feels very comfortable. All the air inside Shri's studio is recirculated every 20 minutes and is mixed with fresh, filtered air from outdoors.

We believe that yoga begins with awareness and control of the breath. It is our breath which delivers prana (life force energy), and our movement in class moves that energy around our body. That is the principle reason we made a major investment in our heating system—because when you’re comfortable, your breathing is more relaxed. Under these conditions, you can focus on your practice and ultimately maximize the benefits of your effort.
